Coffee quick from The Bean Shop

Tuesday, November 28th, 2006

Yesterday, at lunch time, I ordered a 250g pack of Decaff Sumatra Fairtrade Organic coffee beans from The Bean Shop. I arrived at work this morning and there they were on my desk. That’s a speedy service.

I’ll let you know how it tastes later…

Fresh Pancakes

They said “are you mad?”, they said are you “af yer heed?” but still they ate the delicious pancakes I made on the cutting board at the back of the office.

Tea

Tuesday, February 7th, 2006

Once a year, much to Carolyn’s amusement, I try tea to see if I like it. For some 33 years I’ve never really liked tea (I didn’t even drink coffee until I was at college). Anyway, at this year’s annual tasting I decided that this year I do like tea. I like it black with 1.5 / 2 sugars. Put the kettle on…

Peanut Butter

My dad is right! Peanut butter does taste better when eaten from the jar with a spoon!

My favourite peanut butter is Meridian Organic Peanut Butter (Crunchy). Its only ingredient is Roasted Organic Peanuts!

Coffee

Sunday, June 5th, 2005

I noticed the other day that Thomsons Coffee in Renfield St, Glasgow had closed down. I found this quite sad as I used to go there occasionally to pick up coffee and caramel syrup. Perhaps I should have gone there more often.

I find it odd that there a so many more sit-in coffee shops and yet the old traditional shops, the ones that sell the beans and accessories are closing down. Does nobody make decent coffee at home any more? I know I do. I’m sitting here having just finished a delicious homemade caramel latte. Here’s how I made it.

  • Grind the beans in the attachment I’ve got for my blender
  • Fill the bottom of the espresso pot with finest glasgow tap water
  • Pack the finely ground coffee into the middle section of the espresso pot
  • Screw the whole thing back together and stick on the hob
  • Microwave 300-ml of milk for about 2/3 mins. (My microwave isn’t accurate)
  • Pour about a tablespoon of caramel syrup into the bottom of you mug
  • Pour tasty espresso into the mugs
  • Pour half the hot milk into the mugs
  • Froth the leftover milk using my “1.50 IKEA Aerolatte clone and distribute evenly into the mugs
  • Enjoy

It looks like a lot of work but it really is damn tasty. Better than Starbucks.

At the moment I’m drinking redmonkeycoffee.co.uk Colombian Decaffeinated Coffee. It’s pretty good. Decent price and quick delivery. However, I’ve just discovered The Bean Shop, they are based in Perth. Once my redmonkeycoffee.co.uk supply has run out I’ll be getting some sumatra organic fairtrade decaffeinated.

You’ll notice I drink decaf coffee. Why? Well I suffer from tinnitus and I’d read that caffeine can make the ringing noise louder. That and a gibber like a fool when on caffeine.

Here’s a list of my top ten beers/lagers.

They are are no particular order although Bohemia is my favourite right now.

What’s your favourite beer/lagers? Anything I should check out?

Oh, I just remembered about Asahi. It’s very good too.

Recipe

Sunday, May 1st, 2005

I’ve been eating a lot of salad recently as part of my diet. And to honest it’s getting pretty tedious. So I’ve been experimenting with different salad dressings. Here’s a recipe for my current favourite.

The default recipe will make enough dressing for one large salad for one person.

  • 1 Tbsp Olive Oil
  • 1 Tbsp Lemon Juice
  • 1 Tbsp Sweet Chilli Sauce
  • A good couple of grinds of fresh pepper

Now all you need is to mix that up (I use a cocktail shaker of course!) and apply to your salad.

I had this dressing on chinese leaves with spring onions and grilled salmon fillets the other night. It was delicious.
